January 12, 2006
Property development and investment company Tilfen Land Ltd have won two major trophies for The Woolwich Schoolhouse development in South East London at the prestigious 2005 Daily Telegraph What House? Magazine Awards – the Oscars of the house building industry.
Tilfen Land’s sympathetic conversion of a Grade II listed Victorian school building won the Bronze Award for Best Interior Layout and the Silver Award in the Best Apartment category.
The Woolwich Schoolhouse development is set in the former Woolwich Polytechnic, a four-storey London Board school with a separate single-storey building dating from the 1890s and Grade II listed. The development provides one, two and three bedroom apartments – together with an affordable housing provision for key workers. The first phase of 17 apartments are now complete and phase two, which is now on site, will provide a further 44 apartments plus affordable housing.
The Woolwich Schoolhouse was one of only three developments to win more than one award at the What House Awards.
Commenting on the awards, Tilfen Land development director Simon Newsholme, said “We are delighted to receive these two prestigious awards. The Schoolhouse has already attracted great interest for its successful blending of character and history with modern and striking architecture and these awards confirm the value of our commitment to good design. We have also paid particular attention to the environmental aspects of the development, which has received an EcoHomes rating of Good, and to the courtyard landscaping which will provide a habitat for local indigenous wild life.”
